“Needing to have reality confirmed and experience enhanced by photographs is an aesthetic consumerism to which everyone is now addicted. Industrial societies turn their citizens into image-junkies; it is the most irresistible form of mental pollution. Poignant longings for beauty, for an end to probing below the surface, for a redemption and celebration of the body of the world-all these elements of erotic feeling are affirmed in the pleasure we take in photographs. But other, less liberating feelings are expressed as well. It would not be wrong to speak of people having a compulsion to photograph: to tum experience itself into a way of seeing. Ultimately, having an experience becomes identical with taking a photograph of it, and participating in a public event comes more and more to be equivalent to looking at it in photographed form. That most logical of nineteenth-century aesthetes, Mallarme, said that everything in the world exists in order to end in a book. Today everything exists to end in a photograph.”

ফটোগ্রাফি বইয়ের প্রসঙ্গ উঠলে Susan Sontag-এর On Photography বইটিকে এড়ানো যায় না কিছুতেই। আধুনিক ও উত্তর-আধুনিক ফটোগ্রাফি চিন্তার গভীর বিশ্লেষণাত্মক দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি বইটির ছত্রে ছত্রে ফুটে ওঠে। স্বাদে একটু কড়া, ভাষা মাঝে মাঝে বেশ ধাক্কা দেয়। ইংরাজি শব্দভাণ্ডার ঝালিয়ে নিতে হয় পড়তে পড়তে। অনুধাবন করতে সময় লাগে। তবে এ বই না পড়ে উপায় নেই।
On Photography প্রথম প্রকাশিত হয় The New York Review of Books-এ ১৯৭৩ সালের অক্টোবরে। আগ্রহীরা সেই প্রথম সংখ্যার ডিজিট্যাল পাতাটি দেখতে পারেন NYRB Website-এ। বইটি ফটোগ্রাফি সম্পর্কিত কয়েকটি প্রবন্ধের সংকলন যেগুলি তিনি The New York Review of Books-এর জন্য ১৯৭৩ থেকে ১৯৭৭ পর্যন্ত লেখেন। পরে প্রবন্ধগুলি সংকলিত হয়ে বইয়ের আকার নেয়।
বইটির মুল বক্তব্য ফটোগ্রাফির চরিত্র নিয়ে। এবং সে কেবলমাত্র বাহ্যিক চরিত্র নয়। তিনি কথা বলেছেন সম্পূর্ণ Photographic Experience নিয়ে। সে ফটোগ্রাফার এবং দর্শক উভয়দিক থেকেই। ফটোগ্রাফি জনসাধারণের আয়ত্বের মধ্যে আসার পর থেকেই আমরা অসংখ্য, মানে অসংখ্যেরও বেশি ছবি তুলে গেছি। প্রতিনিয়ত। আজ এমন মানুষ খুঁজে পাওয়া ভার যিনি ছবি তোলেন নি বা তোলেন না, সে মোবাইল দিয়েই হোক না কেন। Susan Sontag এইটেকেই বলছেন Addiction – তাঁর কাছে ফটোগ্রাফি হয়তো আর শিল্প নয় – শক্তির উপাদান – Tool of Power, যা সাধারণ মানুষ সহজেই ব্যবহার করতে পারে প্রতিনিয়ত।
আরো একটা বিষয় খুব পরিস্কার করে আলোচনা হয়েছে এই বইতে। সে হল ফটোগ্রাফির বাস্তবতা। আমরা সাধারণ ধারণায় যা বুঝি – ফটোগ্রাফের চেয়ে বাস্তব আর কিছু হয় না। ছবিই বাস্তবতার প্রমাণ। এই ধারণাটারই গোড়ায় ঘা দেয় এই বই। ফটোগ্রাফের বাস্তবতা সম্পর্কে তিনি সরাসরি বলেন যে ফটোগ্রাফ যে বাস্তবতা ধরে রাখে তা ফটোগ্রাফার যেমনভাবে বাস্তবতাকে ভাবেন সেই ছবি। এবং এই অর্থে দেখলে তা আঁকা ছবির মতই অবাস্তব।
“Even when photographers are most concerned with mirroring reality, they are still haunted by tacit imperatives of taste and conscience. The immensely gifted members of the Farm Security Administration photographic project of the late 1930s ( among them Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Ben Shahn, Russell Lee) would take dozens of frontal pictures of one of their sharecropper subjects until satisfied that they had gotten just the right look on film-the precise expression on the subject’s face that supported their own notions about poverty, light, dignity, texture, exploitation, and geometry. In deciding how a picture should look, in preferring one exposure to another, photographers are always imposing standards on their subjects. Although there is a sense in which the camera does indeed capture reality, not just interpret it, photographs are as much an interpretation of the world as paintings and drawings are.“
বইটি প্রশংসা এবং নিন্দা দুই-ই পেয়ছে ক্রমাগতঃ। প্রশংসা এই কারনে; যে প্রশ্নগুলো Susan তুলেছেন তা অগ্রাহ্য করার উপায় নেই। তাঁর বক্তব্য অত্যন্ত ক্ষুরধার এবং গভীর। যে কোন সচেতন ফটোগ্রাফারকে এই প্রশ্নগুলো চিন্তা করতে বাধ্য করে। আবার উল্টোদিকে বেশ কিছু সমালোচকের মতে তিনি যেন বড়ো বেশি রকম আক্রমণাত্মক এবং বেশ খানিকটা একপেশে বক্তব্য রেখেছেন।
